A 26-year-old Punjabi youth from Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district died after being trapped inside his burning vehicle following a devastating road accident in Canada’s capital, Ottawa.
The deceased has been identified as Brahmjot Singh, a resident of Tanda in Hoshiarpur. According to reports, the accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on Wednesday in Ottawa’s southwest area near the intersection of Fallowfield Road and Old Richmond Road.
Brahmjot was driving a Honda CR-V when it collided head-on with a Kia Sorento. The impact was so severe that both vehicles were thrown nearly 25 feet apart before catching fire.
Ottawa Fire Services and police officials said the flames were intense, making it difficult for firefighters to approach the vehicles initially. After bringing the blaze under control, emergency responders discovered Brahmjot’s charred body in the front seat of the Honda. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The driver of the Kia Sorento was rescued from the wreckage and rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
Brahmjot had moved to Canada two years ago in search of better opportunities. News of his tragic death plunged his hometown of Tanda into mourning, with relatives, friends and local residents gathering to offer condolences to the bereaved family.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash and whether negligence by either driver contributed to the fatal collision.
