SBS Nagar Police Busts a Gang of Opium Smugglers Having an International Supply Network through Postal Services

NAWANSHAHR: Giving a fillip to the drive against drug smugglers launched by Punjab Government, the SBS Nagar district police have achieved a major success. The police have busted a gang of smugglers having an international supply network through postal services by arresting one of the accused.

Bhagirath Singh Meena, Senior Superintendent of Police, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar while interacting with media persons here today, said that on February 01, Sub Inspector, Satnam Singh of PS Sadar Nawanshahr received an information that Bhupinder Singh @ Bhuri s/o Ajit Singh resident of Village Bainsa, PS Sadar, Nawanshahr is supplying opium in foreign countries through postal services with the help of Barjinder Kumar son of Harmesh Lal resident of Village Ladhana Ucha, PS Sadar Banga, who is working in postal department at Nawanshahr. It was also informed that they both have sent two parcels of opium recently through post and the same can be recovered with their timely arrest.

As per the information received,a Case FIR No. 14 dated 01.02.2023 U/s 18/61/85 NDPS P.S. Sadar Nawanshahr was registered against both the accused. On further investigation of this case, police party of PS Sadar Nawanshahr arrested Barjinder Kumar (37 years) on February 1, who during interrogation, disclosed that he had sent two parcels weighing 450/450 grams of opium through postal service from Post Office Kahma to Canada and Italy on the behest of Bhupinder Singh, for which accused Bhupinder Singh Bhuri had deposited Rs. 60000/- in his bank account from foreign. On his disclosure, SBS Nagar Police acted swiftly and got both the parcels seized through Custom Department, IGI Airport New Delhi from which 450/450 grams of opium was recovered by the Custom department. The further interrogation of accused Barjinder Kumar, who is on 04 days police remand, is being carried out from which more revelations are expected. Raids are being conducted to arrest second accused Bhupinder Singh @ Bhuri.

Details of cases registered against Bhupinder Singh @ Bhuri are as follows;

1) FIR No. 24 dated 28-03-2022 u/s 279,337,338 IPC PS Mukandpur,

2) FIR No. 95 dated 20-09-2012 u/s 354,376,511 IPC PS Sadar, Nawanshahar (Conviction 10 yrs. on 27-07-2013) October-2016 on bail from High Court),

3) FIR No. 44 dated 25-05-2011 u/s 323,324,341,506,148,149 IPC PS Sadar Nawanshahar.
