At least 28 students and a teacher were killed after the roof of a school collapsed in Peshawar, Pakistan, a spokesperson for a local hospital said on Thursday.

The administration of Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) initially reported four deaths. However, it later confirmed that the bodies of 28 children had been brought to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Capital City Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed said more than 40 people were injured in the roof collapse in the provincial capital. Rescue workers had earlier reported that several children were trapped under the debris following the incident.

A rescue operation has been launched, with teams searching through the rubble for trapped students and school staff. Emergency personnel are working to locate those still believed to be beneath the collapsed structure.

Samar Haroon Bilour, the Governor’s Adviser on Information and Public Relations Affairs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), expressed grief over the incident. She also directed the authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured children.
