Six Injured as Fire Breaks Out at Godown in Northwest Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar

Six people were injured after a fire broke out at a godown in Swaroop Nagar in northwest Delhi on Sunday, triggering a major firefighting operation in the area. The blaze was reported at around 11.05 am in Gali No. 2 of Khadda Colony, following which multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

The Delhi Fire Services deployed 15 units to control the blaze. The firefighting operation included five special water tenders, seven water bowsers, a breathing and fire tender, a quick response vehicle and a multipurpose vehicle. Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control at around 1.50 pm.

According to officials, the fire broke out inside a godown where rexine scrap and cotton webbing were stored. The nature of the material inside the premises added to the firefighting challenge as teams worked to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby structures.

The affected building comprised a basement, ground floor, first floor and a tin shed on the second floor. The structure stood on an area of around 200 square yards, officials said.

While firefighters worked to contain the blaze, smoke spread into an adjacent house, leaving six people injured. Five of them were taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital for treatment after they suffered injuries due to smoke inhalation.

Another person sustained an injury to the right leg after jumping from an adjacent building while attempting to escape the situation. The injured person was taken to a government hospital in Burari for treatment.

The fire was eventually brought under control at around 1.50 pm, after which teams continued to assess the site and the surrounding area. The firefighting operation involved a combination of water tenders, bowsers and specialised vehicles to control the flames and deal with the situation.

Officials said further details about what caused the fire were still being ascertained. The extent of damage to the godown and the material stored inside it was also being assessed.

The incident triggered a swift emergency response in the densely populated area, with fire teams working to prevent the blaze from spreading beyond the godown. The exact circumstances that led to the outbreak, as well as the overall extent of property damage, will be known after the assessment is completed.
