A speeding tipper truck hit two bike-borne youths near Lovely Professional University (LPU) on the Jalandhar Cantt highway late Thursday night, killing a doctor on the spot and seriously injuring his companion.

The deceased was identified as Manish, who was a doctor, while his companion Deepak sustained serious injuries in the accident.

According to Deepak, the two were returning after attending to a patient at a house behind LPU. As they were coming down from the flyover and travelling on their side of the road, a speeding tipper suddenly hit their motorcycle.

Deepak said the truck initially brushed against the bike but struck it again moments later. Following the collision, the tipper dragged both riders for a considerable distance. Deepak said he remained trapped underneath the truck for some time.

He managed to save himself by grabbing the truck's tyres and moving towards the centre underneath the vehicle. However, Manish could not get away and was fatally crushed.

Police and an ambulance reached the spot soon after receiving information about the accident. Deepak was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Deepak alleged that the tipper driver may have been under the influence of intoxicants and urged the police to question him and determine his condition at the time of the accident. However, the allegation has not been confirmed, and the driver's condition will be established through police investigation and medical examination.

Police have taken the tipper driver into custody and launched an investigation into the accident.
