A 20-year-old youth was killed and his friend seriously injured after a speeding truck allegedly ran over their scooter near D-Mart on Gill Canal Road in Ludhiana late Thursday night.
The deceased has been identified as Rohit Kumar (20), while the injured youth, Parveen, is undergoing treatment at Kalyan Hospital. Both were residents of the Bapu School area in Basti Jodhewal and were reportedly natives of Nepal.
According to family members and local residents, the accident occurred when the Activa scooter carrying the two youths collided with an ambulance that was allegedly parked in the wrong direction on Canal Road. Moments later, a truck approaching from behind reportedly ran over them. Both the truck driver and the ambulance driver are said to have fled the scene after the incident.
Rohit’s brother, Varinder Kumar, said that Rohit had recently secured admission to a B-Pharmacy course at Sigma College and had joined just two days ago. He was the second among three siblings, with one brother and a sister.
Residents alleged that negligence by both the truck driver and the ambulance operator contributed to the fatal accident. They have demanded that police identify and arrest those responsible.
According to the family, Rohit’s father works as a security guard. Following the incident, the Marado police outpost under Sadar Police Station launched an investigation. Police are examining CCTV footage from the accident site and nearby areas to determine the sequence of events, the truck’s speed, and the role of the drivers involved.
The victim’s family has demanded strict action against those responsible for the tragedy.
