Sports ministry suspends TTFI recognition over governance failures

India’s table tennis administration suffered a major setback on Wednesday after the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports suspended the recognition of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI). The ministry cited serious governance deficiencies and the federation’s failure to conduct elections on time as the primary reasons for the action.

According to the ministry’s order, TTFI had earlier been served a show-cause notice, but its response was found to be unsatisfactory, prompting the suspension of recognition.

IOA Asked to Form Ad-Hoc Committee

Along with the suspension, the ministry directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to take steps to ensure the continued administration of the sport in the country. The IOA has been asked to create an ad-hoc committee in consultation with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and put in place an interim regulatory mechanism.

The arrangement will remain in force until a properly constituted and legally compliant governance structure is restored within TTFI.

Delayed Elections a Key Concern

One of the most significant issues highlighted by the ministry was the delay in holding TTFI elections. The federation’s explanation failed to satisfy the ministry, leading to the decision to suspend its recognition.

TTFI has faced administrative disputes in the past as well. Reports published in April 2026 had pointed to an ongoing power struggle and differences between senior office-bearers, including the federation’s president and secretary-general.

Interim Administration to Continue

Following the ministry’s decision, responsibility for overseeing table tennis administration is expected to shift temporarily to the IOA-led ad-hoc arrangement. The IOA has been instructed to work with the ITTF to ensure that the sport continues to function smoothly while governance reforms are undertaken.

The suspension marks a significant blow to Indian table tennis administration and increases pressure on TTFI to address its governance shortcomings and restore a regular administrative framework.
