Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat received major relief on Friday after the Supreme Court allowed her to participate in the trials for the 2026 Asian Games. With the ruling, the celebrated wrestler has become eligible to compete in the selection trials beginning May 30.
During the hearing, the apex court observed, “Had it been someone else, the matter would have been different. She has made the country proud.” However, the court also expressed serious concern over the manner in which such disputes are being handled and cautioned against frequent judicial intervention in sports-related matters.
The Supreme Court made the remarks while hearing a plea filed by the Wrestling Federation of India challenging the Delhi High Court’s decision that had permitted Vinesh Phogat to take part in the trials.
Addressing the wrestler, the bench said, “You are a brilliant athlete, but the nation comes first.”
Justice PS Narasimha also made strong oral observations during the hearing, stating, “This is not a medical college admission matter. These are national and international sporting events. Courts should not intervene in such cases in a manner that disrupts the entire schedule.”
