The Supreme Court has taken a strict stance on delays in judicial decisions, directing all High Courts across the country to deliver judgments within a maximum of three months after reserving orders.

A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed that delays in delivering verdicts cause “irreparable harm” to litigants and undermine the justice system.

The court particularly emphasized that cases involving personal liberty must be prioritised.

It directed that orders in bail applications should ideally be pronounced on the same day they are reserved. If not possible, they must be pronounced and uploaded by the next day.

Issuing a series of guidelines, the bench further stated that orders related to bail or suspension of sentence must be immediately communicated to jail authorities. It added that undertrial prisoners or convicts should preferably be released the same day, or at the latest by the following day after the order is passed.

The ruling aims to ensure quicker justice delivery and prevent unnecessary detention due to procedural delays.
