Suvendu Adhikari has been elected as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal following a legislative party meeting held at a convention centre in Kolkata. The announcement was made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the meeting, where Adhikari was unanimously chosen as the leader of the legislative party.
Addressing the meeting, Shah said that the ideological journey that began in 1950 with the vision of Syama Prasad Mukherjee has now culminated in the formation of the government in the state. He also sharply criticised the previous regime, stating that under the governance of Mamata Banerjee, criminals had entered politics, leaving little room for development.
Shah further added that such a situation would end within a few months and asserted that the BJP would “identify and remove infiltrators one by one from not only Bengal but the entire country,” calling it a matter of national security rather than political polarisation.
Suvendu Adhikari, who is 56 years old, is scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister at 10 AM tomorrow at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. The ceremony is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and several senior NDA leaders.
Adhikari is a prominent political figure in the state, having defeated Mamata Banerjee from Bhabanipur and securing consecutive victories from Nandigram, where he had also defeated her in 2021. The BJP secured 207 seats in the recent Assembly elections, marking a significant political shift in the state.
