A major landslide in Himachal Pradesh's tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti claimed the lives of 13 people on Friday after a taxi was buried under debris near Kadu Nala on the Udaipur–Killar road.
The ill-fated Tata Sumo taxi (HP-01M-2210), travelling from Kullu to Pangi, was carrying 15 passengers when a large portion of the hillside suddenly collapsed onto the vehicle. According to preliminary reports, 13 occupants, including a six-month-old infant, lost their lives in the tragic accident.
Lahaul and Spiti Superintendent of Police Shivani Mehla confirmed the incident. Soon after the accident was reported, teams from the Tindi Police Station, the district administration, and rescue personnel rushed to the site. A large-scale rescue and relief operation is currently underway.
Officials said the Udaipur–Killar road had remained closed a day earlier due to landslides, forcing the passengers to stay overnight in Tindi. After the route was reopened on Friday, the taxi resumed its journey towards Pangi. However, near Kadu Nala, a massive section of the mountain gave way, burying the vehicle under heavy debris.
Bharmour MLA Dr. Janak Raj expressed deep grief over the tragedy, describing it as a heartbreaking incident that has shaken the entire state. He paid tribute to the victims and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.
Dr. Janak Raj said he has been in constant touch with senior officials of the Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti district administrations since learning about the accident and is closely monitoring the rescue and relief operations. He also assured that every possible assistance would be provided to the affected families in coordination with the administration.
