A tragic road accident claimed the lives of three people associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) near village Bassian on the Jagraon–Raikot Road in Punjab late Thursday night. Two others were injured in the incident.

The deceased have been identified as AAP leader Balkar Singh, Vishal, and Sandeep. According to local sources, all of them were considered close associates of Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema in Ludhiana.

According to preliminary information, the AAP workers were returning to Dirba after attending a party-related function in Nakodar. At around 1:15 am, about 12 km from Jagraon, their speeding car reportedly lost control near village Bassian on the Raikot Road.

Before plunging into a deep water-filled village pond (chappar) alongside the road, the car is also reported to have collided with a bus. The vehicle sank rapidly into the water, leaving the occupants with little chance to escape.

Hearing the loud impact, nearby villagers and passersby rushed to the spot and alerted the police and rescue teams. After strenuous efforts, rescuers managed to pull the trapped occupants out of the submerged vehicle.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police have started an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including the circumstances surrounding the reported collision with the bus.
