The three-day strike called by contract employees of the Punjab Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) and Punjab Bus Service (Pan Bus) affected government bus operations in Mohali on Monday, causing inconvenience to commuters and leading to heavy crowds at the local bus stand.
With several government buses off the roads, passengers were seen waiting for long hours in humid and hot weather for transport to their destinations. Women commuters were also unable to avail the state’s free travel facility due to the disruption in services. The inconvenience is likely to continue until Wednesday if the strike remains unresolved.
The impact was most severe for daily commuters who depend on government buses for work, education, and other essential activities. Reduced bus frequency forced many passengers to wait for extended periods, adding to the hardship amid the prevailing weather conditions.
Several travellers reported missing scheduled connections and reaching their destinations late. In the absence of adequate government transport, many were compelled to use private buses, resulting in higher travel expenses.
The strike has once again highlighted the heavy dependence of a large section of Punjab’s population on public bus services and the difficulties faced by commuters whenever transport operations are disrupted.
