A 25-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child lost their lives in a suspected domestic violence incident in Burj Littan village of Ludhiana district. The deceased, identified as Harpreet Kaur, was reportedly three months pregnant at the time of her death.
Police have detained her husband, Jaspreet Singh alias Jassa, and his grandfather, Joginder Singh, based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s family. Station House Officer Kulwinder Singh of Sidhwan Bet police station said the body has been sent to Ludhiana Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination, and the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the investigation and medical report.
According to the victim’s relatives, Harpreet had earlier returned to her parental home due to frequent domestic disputes. On Sunday, Jaspreet allegedly persuaded her to return to Burj Littan, assuring her that he would give up his drug addiction. However, family members claim that on Monday night, he returned home intoxicated and brutally assaulted Harpreet before allegedly strangling her.
The victim’s family has alleged that injury marks were found on her body and accused Jaspreet of attempting to portray the death as a suicide. They also questioned who brought the body down from the roof if it was indeed a case of suicide.
The case has sparked outrage in the village, with relatives and residents accusing the husband of drug abuse and violent behavior. Police are examining all aspects of the case, and further action will depend on the findings of the post-mortem report. Harpreet’s family has demanded strict punishment for those responsible.
