Two people were killed after an under-construction three-storey building collapsed in Old Delhi's Chawri Bazar area on Thursday morning. Several people are feared trapped under the debris, prompting an extensive rescue operation.

The incident took place at around 9:50 am in Gali Sitara, near Chawri Bazar Metro Station. At least six fire department vehicles, including water tankers and rescue vehicles, were rushed to the spot. Senior officials are monitoring the rescue operation.

The collapse comes amid concerns over the structural safety of old buildings in the area.

Meanwhile, a portion of the over 160-year-old Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Town Hall in Chandni Chowk also collapsed earlier this week following heavy rainfall over two consecutive days last week.

An MCD official said the building had already been declared unsafe and barricaded to prevent public access. The collapse damaged the entrance porch roof and two heavy beams, along with parts of the historic structure.

The front section of the building, portions of the first floor and walls surrounding the main entrance were also damaged. The clock installed above the entrance was affected, while cracks appeared in a nearby wall.

Senior MCD officials said the affected portion had already been declared structurally unsafe. Visitors had been advised to stay away from the area, and entry into the restricted section had been prohibited as a precautionary measure.
