US President Donald Trump has clarified his widely circulated “I’m the boss” remark made during the recent G7 Summit in France, saying the statement was intended as a joke and not a serious assertion of authority.
The video, which went viral on social media, showed Trump entering a room filled with leaders of the world’s major democracies and jokingly declaring himself “the boss.” The clip sparked widespread discussion and debate, with many interpreting the comment as a display of confidence and dominance.
Addressing the controversy during an interview on The Axios Show, Trump said the remark was made in a light-hearted manner and should not have been taken seriously. Recalling the moment, he explained that he simply wanted to be humorous while entering the meeting room where other world leaders were already seated.
When the host asked how many leaders may have believed his statement, Trump responded that everyone heard the comment but understood it was made in jest. He said he walked into the room, looked at the assembled heads of state, and jokingly said, “I’m the boss,” without intending to project authority.
Trump added that he was surprised by the global reaction to the remark, saying he was “just trying to be funny” and was not attempting to portray himself as superior to the other leaders.
The incident occurred on the final day of the three-day G7 Summit in France, where leaders gathered to discuss major global issues. Trump attended the summit shortly after celebrating his 80th birthday, joining representatives from some of the world’s most influential democratic nations.
The G7 presidency rotates annually among member countries. France assumed the chairmanship after Canada hosted the previous summit and is expected to hand over the presidency to the United States in 2027.
