Karoline Leavitt, widely regarded as one of U.S. President Donald Trump’s most trusted allies, has resigned from her post as White House Press Secretary. The 28-year-old is expected to leave the White House later this month.
President Trump announced the development on social media, saying that Leavitt wants to devote more time to her family and two young children. He added that she will continue to serve as an external adviser to him and remain involved with the Republican Party.
Leavitt made history at the age of 27 by becoming the youngest White House Press Secretary in U.S. history. She had taken a brief maternity leave following the birth of her daughter in May and returned to work only a few days ago. She is also the mother of a two-year-old son.
For nearly 20 months, Leavitt served as one of the administration’s most prominent public voices. During press briefings, she frequently defended Trump’s policies, decisions and controversies, often responding aggressively to tough questions from reporters.
Her confrontational exchanges with journalists regularly attracted headlines. In one particularly controversial briefing, she reportedly described a reporter as “left-wing minded” and “a disgrace to journalism,” sparking widespread criticism.
Leavitt also repeatedly accused sections of the mainstream media of bias against the Trump administration, claiming that some news organisations were running an agenda against the government. Critics, however, accused her of resorting to personal attacks in order to avoid answering difficult questions.
Her departure marks the end of a high-profile and often combative tenure that made her one of the most recognisable faces of the Trump administration’s media operation.
