Mohali Police on Monday arrested two alleged drug smugglers following an encounter in the Industrial Area, days after they allegedly opened fire on two CIA constables during a heroin recovery operation near Saneta village. Two pistols were recovered from the accused during the operation.
According to police, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) had been tracking the suspects since Saturday after they fled following the attack on the CIA team. Acting on specific intelligence, police laid a trap in Mohali's Industrial Area on Monday. When the suspects allegedly opened fire, police retaliated, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
During the encounter, two accused, identified as Jaskaran and Lakhwinder, both residents of Mohali, sustained bullet injuries before being taken into custody. Their accomplice, Gagan, managed to escape and is currently being hunted by police.
The suspects are accused of launching a deadly attack on a Mohali CIA team on Saturday evening when officers had gone near Saneta village to recover a consignment of heroin. During the operation, the smugglers allegedly fired at the police and also attacked them with swords.
The assault left CIA constables Jagjit Singh and Parmjit Singh alias Pamma seriously injured after they suffered gunshot wounds. The attackers fled the scene, prompting an intensive manhunt by the AGTF and Mohali Police.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) visited the encounter site to review the operation. The SSP said that two other associates linked to the case had already surrendered before a court, while efforts are underway to arrest the absconding accused and continue the investigation.
