Vegetable vendor held for minor’s rape

CHANDIGARH: A 22-year-old vegetable vendor has been arrested on the charge of raping a 16-year-old girl. The suspect, identified as Deepak, a resident of Burail village, was produced in a local court, which sent him to judicial custody.
The suspect had reportedly raped the minor on November 12 on the pretext of marriage. The victim had filed a complaint against him today, after which her medical examination was conducted at the GMSH, Sector 16 .

A case under Section 376 of the IPC and Section 6 of the POCSO Act was registered against the suspect at the Sector 34 police station. Police sources said the suspect had allegedly committed the crime with the girl twice — at a hotel and at the victim’s home.
Meanwhile, the police have booked a resident of Fatehgarh Sahib on the charge of rape. A complaint in this connection was received on the public window at the Sector 17 police station some time ago.

Police sources said the victim claimed that the accused violated her on the pretext of marriage. A legal opinion was taken and the evidence collected before a case was registered at the Sector 17 police station. The suspect was on the run. Further investigation in the case was under way, said the police.
