A young man died of electrocution in Naya Gaon, Mohali, early Friday morning after coming in contact with an electrified power pole during heavy rain.
According to preliminary information, the victim was on his way to work at around 5 a.m. when the incident occurred. Near an electricity pole, exposed wire joints and accumulated rainwater reportedly caused the area to become electrically charged.
As the youth passed the spot on his bicycle, he came into contact with the live current and was electrocuted. He fell into the water along with his bicycle.
About an hour later, when the rain eased and local residents stepped outside, they found the youth lying in the water with his bicycle. The discovery triggered panic in the area. Residents immediately informed the authorities and got the power supply switched off.
Police reached the spot after receiving information and shifted the body to a hospital.
Local residents alleged that electrical wires have been left exposed at several places in the area, creating a dangerous network of tangled and damaged cables. They said the incident highlights the serious safety risks posed by exposed electrical infrastructure, particularly during the monsoon.
