A 25-year-old man was killed and his friend seriously injured after a group of 10 to 12 armed attackers allegedly ambushed them in Chandigarh's Mauli Jagran area late on Sunday night.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Tota, a resident of Vikas Nagar in Mauli Jagran, was heading towards the local market with his 22-year-old friend Akash around 10:30 pm when the attackers surrounded them. The assailants allegedly assaulted both men before attacking them with sharp-edged weapons after they resisted.

Both victims collapsed on the road with severe injuries. Local residents alerted the police control room, following which officers from Mauli Jagran Police Station rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to hospitals. Tota was taken to Sector-32 Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, while Akash was admitted to a hospital in Panchkula and remains under treatment in critical condition.

A video of the incident has also surfaced, reportedly showing the attackers chasing Tota, overpowering him, and repeatedly striking him with sharp weapons after he fell to the ground.

Police said the victim sustained multiple sharp weapon injuries, including a fatal blow to the chest. Preliminary investigation indicates that the attack may have been the result of an old personal rivalry. Investigators are questioning family members and acquaintances while examining the victims' past disputes.

Mauli Jagran Station House Officer Inspector Jaskaran Singh said a case has been registered under charges of murder, attempt to murder, and relevant provisions of the Arms Act. Police are using CCTV footage to identify the accused and have launched raids to arrest those involved.
