A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan on Sunday morning, shaking coastal areas near Iwate Prefecture. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake occurred at 7:25 a.m. local time, with its epicentre located off the northeastern coast of Iwate at a depth of approximately 40 kilometres beneath the seabed.
The tremors were also felt in Aomori Prefecture and several surrounding regions, prompting residents to briefly evacuate buildings in some areas.
Despite the moderate strength of the quake, authorities did not issue a tsunami warning, and there were no immediate reports of casualties, injuries, or property damage.
Officials, however, urged residents to remain cautious as repeated seismic activity has heightened concerns over the possibility of landslides in vulnerable areas. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have advised people to stay alert for any aftershocks.
