Congress’s Punjab unit is facing continued internal differences ahead of the proposed 2027 Assembly elections, with Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring offering to resign from his post on Wednesday, party sources said.

Amid speculation over his future, Warring gave a guarded response while speaking to reporters in Chandigarh. As he left for Delhi, he said he did not want to comment on the issue and would speak when the “right time” came.

According to party sources, the Congress high command had conveyed to Warring its decision to remove him as Punjab Congress chief, following which he offered his resignation.

With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, former minister and Congress Working Committee member Vijay Inder Singla is reportedly among the frontrunners for the post. Singla was appointed chairman of the party’s Election Management and Coordination Committee on July 1.

Apart from Singla, the names of former Olympian and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Partap Singh, former MLA Rana K.P. Singh, Raja Sansi MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are also being discussed for the position.

Party sources said the announcement of the new Punjab Congress president is expected soon. The change comes amid weeks of reported differences within the state unit as the party prepares for the 2027 Assembly elections.
