Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accelerated preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with the party aiming to return to power for a second consecutive term.
Even before the announcement of the election schedule, the party has begun working on candidate selection and finalising its electoral strategy. As part of these preparations, AAP has called an important meeting in Delhi on Friday, October 30, which will be attended by party supremo Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and other senior leaders.
The primary agenda of the meeting will be to discuss potential candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections. According to sources, the party may release its first list of candidates before November 15. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the list or its release date.
Apart from candidate selection, the meeting is also expected to focus on election management and the party's broader strategy for the polls. Discussions may include whether sitting MLAs should be given another opportunity or whether new faces should be considered in certain constituencies. The party has not officially confirmed these details.
The reported plan to announce candidates ahead of the formal election schedule is aimed at giving prospective nominees sufficient time to become active in their constituencies and strengthen organisational activities at the grassroots level.
AAP's 2022 Performance
AAP formed the government in Punjab after a sweeping victory in the 2022 Assembly elections. The party contested all 117 seats and won 92, while losing the remaining 25.
As it prepares for the next electoral battle, the party will face the challenge of retaining its political position and repeating its previous performance.
Performance in By-elections
AAP has also registered victories in several Assembly by-elections since 2024. In November 2024, the party won three of the four seats that went to bypolls in Punjab, while the Congress secured the remaining seat.
In the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election held in November 2025, AAP candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu won by a margin of 12,091 votes.
Between July 2024 and November 2025, the party won six of the seven Assembly by-elections held in Punjab, losing one seat.
With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the upcoming meeting is expected to be an important step in shaping AAP's candidate selection process and election strategy. The party's final decisions on nominees and the timing of its first candidate list remain awaited.
