Former Indian Air Force Group Captain and Vir Chakra awardee Abhinandan Varthaman has reportedly embarked on a new journey in the aviation sector by joining Goa-based regional airline FLY91 as a pilot.
According to sources, Varthaman became associated with the airline in August. However, a spokesperson for FLY91 declined to comment on the matter, citing employee privacy.
Abhinandan Varthaman gained national recognition in 2019 during the India-Pakistan aerial conflict when he engaged an enemy aircraft in combat. Following the encounter, he was captured in Pakistan and remained in custody for three days before being repatriated to India.
In recognition of his exceptional courage and dedication to duty during the aerial engagement, Varthaman was awarded the Vir Chakra in 2021, India's third-highest wartime gallantry award. The citation praised his outstanding professionalism, bravery, and commitment to service under challenging circumstances.
FLY91, a Goa-based regional airline, commenced operations in March 2024 and currently operates a fleet of six ATR 72-600 aircraft. The airline's primary operational bases are located in Goa and Hyderabad.
The development comes at a time when India is placing increased emphasis on strengthening regional air connectivity, with airlines like FLY91 expanding services to connect smaller cities and underserved destinations across the country.
