Amritsar has once again come under the spotlight over concerns regarding food quality after a special drive by the Food Safety Department revealed alarming irregularities in milk and dairy products sold across the city. Laboratory testing found that 8 out of 12 collected samples failed to meet prescribed food safety standards.

According to the investigation report, two samples were declared unsafe for human consumption, while six others were found to be of substandard quality. Authorities have initiated legal action against the concerned dairies under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Assistant Food Commissioner Dr. G.S. Pannu said that, following directions from the Punjab Food and Drug Administration, officials collected 12 samples of milk, paneer, curd, and other dairy products from various dairies in Amritsar on May 21. The samples were sent to a laboratory in Kharar for analysis.

The test results showed that only four samples met the required quality standards. Among the failed samples, one paneer sample collected from Gill Dairy on Ram Tirath Road was found unsafe for consumption, while another paneer sample from the same dairy was categorized as substandard. A milk sample from Guru Nanak Dairy in Putlighar also failed quality checks.

Similarly, milk and paneer samples collected from Guru Dairy did not meet prescribed standards. Curd from Sharma Dairy and paneer from Chhabra Dairy were also found to be of inferior quality.

Most concerning was a paneer sample collected from Dhillon Dairy in the India Gate area, which was declared unsafe for human consumption. Officials warned that consumption of such products could pose serious health risks to consumers.

The Food Safety Department has stated that strict legal action will be taken against all establishments whose samples failed testing. Authorities emphasized that adulteration and compromise in food quality will not be tolerated, reaffirming their commitment to protecting public health.
