The Bharatiya Janata Party has appointed Kewal Singh Dhillon as the new president of its Punjab unit ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The move is being seen as part of the party’s strategy to strengthen its Sikh leadership and expand its base in the state.

Dhillon had joined the BJP four years ago after leaving the Indian National Congress. With his appointment, he is expected to emerge as the BJP’s prominent Sikh face in Punjab politics.

Before Dhillon’s appointment, Sunil Jakhar was serving as the Punjab BJP chief. Although Jakhar had reportedly offered his resignation after the Lok Sabha elections, the party had not accepted it. Sources indicate that Nayab Singh Saini, who has been actively campaigning for the BJP in Punjab, also supported Dhillon’s elevation.

Dhillon is considered a close associate of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. He was at the Governor House in Chandigarh when his appointment was officially announced. He had accompanied BJP leaders for a meeting with the Election Commission.

Speaking after taking charge, Dhillon expressed confidence about the party’s future in Punjab and said the BJP would form the government in 2027. He stated that the entire party stands united and will work collectively to strengthen the BJP in the state.
