Inflation continues to tighten its grip on common citizens as another price hike adds to their worries. After recent increases in petrol, diesel and essential commodities like milk, residents of Punjab and Chandigarh are now facing a fresh setback with a rise in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices. The hike is expected to directly impact thousands of daily commuters and vehicle owners who rely on CNG as a cost-effective fuel alternative.
According to the latest updates, Think Gas has increased the price of CNG by ₹2 per kilogram, while Indian Oil Corporation Limited has also raised rates by ₹1.25 per kg. The revised prices have already come into effect, leaving consumers paying more at filling stations since the previous day.
The sudden increase is likely to put additional financial pressure on taxi drivers, auto-rickshaw operators, and individuals who travel long distances daily. Many of these users had shifted to CNG in recent years to cut down fuel expenses amid rising petrol and diesel prices. However, with CNG rates steadily climbing, the expected savings are now diminishing.
Industry sources attribute the price hike to fluctuations in global crude oil markets, which have significantly increased operational costs for fuel companies. Oil firms argue that they have been absorbing rising costs for a long time, and the latest revision is necessary to offset mounting losses.
CNG has long been considered a cleaner and cheaper fuel option compared to conventional fuels. Its growing adoption across urban areas was largely driven by affordability and environmental benefits. But with frequent price revisions, consumers are beginning to question its long-term viability as a budget-friendly choice.
As fuel costs continue to rise across the board, experts warn that transportation expenses could increase further, potentially leading to higher fares and a ripple effect on the prices of goods and services. For now, the common man is left grappling with yet another blow to household budgets.
