President Droupadi Murmu on Monday conferred the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award, upon Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Paralympic gold medallist para high jumper Praveen Kumar.

The awards were announced earlier in January as part of the Padma Awards list, which also included several other prominent sportspersons, including cricketer Rohit Sharma.

Harmanpreet Kaur created history last year by becoming the first Indian women’s captain to lead the team to a World Cup title. She was honoured for her outstanding career, achievements, and leadership in international cricket.

The Punjab-born cricketer has represented India in 7 Tests, 164 ODIs, and 195 T20 Internationals, scoring 230, 4,541, and 3,991 runs respectively.
