Chandigarh- The Haryana Forest Department organized worship functions across the state to honor the Pran Vayu Devta (PVD) trees on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF), Haryana,Pankaj Goel  said that honoring Pran Vayu Devta trees through the statewide worship function not only recognizes their ecological value but also reinforces our commitment to preserving Haryana's rich natural heritage for future generations. The celebration was worked by worshipping 3,876 trees spread across the entire state. The local people along with officers and officials of department   took part in the Pran Vayu Devta trees’s  worship celebrations. The worship functions held on World Environment Day saw widespread participation, reflecting the community's commitment to preserving Haryana's natural heritage.

He  said that the this initiative is part of the Pran Vayu Devta Pension Scheme, launched by the Chief Minister  on October 26, 2023 to recognize and preserve trees aged 75 years and older. The Scheme aims to instill an ecological sense and the need to preserve nature among the masses. Under this scheme, custodian of Pran Vayu Devta Trees  aged more than 75 years  receive an annual pension to support the maintenance and care of these trees. The scheme covers 3,876 trees identified by district-level committees throughout the state in the year 2023, he added.

He said that these trees represent approximately 40 different species, including significant ones such as Pipal, Bargad, Neem, Mango, Jaal, Gular, Krishan Kadamb, and Pilkan. Maximum Number of Pran Vayu Devta trees were identified in Rewari District.  All these species are native to India and are of immense ecological value. The custodians of these trees receive an annual pension amount of 2,750 rupees, deposited into their accounts to aid in the upkeep and maintenance of the trees. This pension amount will be adjusted periodically, in accordance with increases in the Old Age Samman Pension scheme, he further added.
