A severe heatwave sweeping across Telangana has turned deadly, claiming 16 lives due to heatstroke in multiple districts. In response, the state government has announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹4 lakh each for the families of the deceased, while intensifying emergency measures to tackle the escalating crisis.

Telangana Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy convened an urgent review meeting with senior officials at the State Secretariat on Saturday, following alarming reports of rising temperatures and fatalities. The Minister directed district administrations to remain on high alert and ensure swift implementation of relief and preventive measures.

According to official data, the fatalities include four deaths in Jayashankar Bhupalpally, three each in Warangal Urban, Karimnagar, and Nizamabad, and one each in Jogulamba Gadwal, Rangareddy, and Suryapet districts. The soaring temperatures have significantly increased the risk of heat-related illnesses, prompting authorities to act with urgency.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of intensified heatwave conditions over the next three days, with several districts expected to experience extreme temperatures until May 26. District collectors have been instructed to strengthen preparedness and ensure the availability of essential services.

As part of immediate relief efforts, officials have been directed to provide uninterrupted access to cold drinking water at public places, distribute ORS packets and buttermilk, and ensure that emergency medical services remain fully operational. Authorities have also been tasked with broadcasting hourly public awareness messages through media and digital platforms to educate citizens on heat safety.

Special precautions have been advised for vulnerable groups, including elderly individuals, pregnant women, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Residents have been strongly urged to avoid outdoor activities between 11 AM and 4 PM unless absolutely necessary.

Highlighting environmental concerns, the Minister also called for adequate drinking water arrangements for birds and animals across both rural and urban areas.

The IMD’s warning covers several districts, including Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Karimnagar, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mulugu, and Mahabubnagar, as the state braces for continued extreme weather conditions.
