In a major step to improve students’ physical fitness, the Himachal Pradesh Education Department has made at least 15 minutes of physical exercise compulsory during the morning assembly in all government schools across the state.
According to instructions issued by the Directorate of Elementary Education, Shimla, all Deputy Directors and school heads have been directed to implement the new rule with immediate effect.
The department stated that the morning assembly will no longer remain a purely formal activity. Instead, it will be linked to the physical and mental development of students. Schools will now have to set aside a minimum of 15 minutes every day for stretching, PT exercises, light sports activities, and fitness routines.
The order further clarified that schools having Physical Education Teachers (PET/DPET) will assign them to conduct the activities. In schools where no physical education teacher is available, other teachers will supervise and guide students in performing the exercises. Cluster-level schools have also been instructed to encourage greater student participation in sports and physical activities.
The department has also directed schools to include prayers carrying moral and positive messages along with the national anthem during the assembly. The aim is to promote discipline, self-confidence, and a spirit of teamwork among students.
In addition, every government school has been asked to ensure one dedicated period for sports activities each day and to provide basic first-aid training to students.
Officials believe that regular physical exercise will help improve children’s overall fitness, reduce problems such as obesity and sedentary lifestyle habits, and enhance concentration in studies. Health and education experts have also supported the move, saying that light morning exercise helps increase energy levels and mental alertness in children.
New instructions will apply to all government schools in Himachal Pradesh, and school principals have been asked to ensure strict compliance. The Education Department described the initiative as an important step towards the holistic development of students.
