A four-year-old boy who fell into a 300-feet-deep borewell in Hoshiarpur on Friday evening was safely rescued after an intense nine-hour long operation involving multiple agencies. After being pulled out, the child immediately clung to his mother and cried.
The child, identified as Gurkaran Singh, fell into the open borewell while playing near his home in Chak Samana village, close to the international border area, around 4 pm on Friday. He was trapped at a depth of nearly 30 feet inside the borewell.
The rescue operation, carried out jointly by the NDRF, SDRF, Punjab Police, district administration, and local villagers, continued through the night. The child was successfully brought out of the borewell at around 12:40 am between Friday and Saturday.
He was immediately rushed to a hospital for medical examination. Doctors later confirmed that his condition was out of danger and he is under observation.
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain and SSP Sandeep Kumar Malik led the rescue operation from the beginning. Officials said that upon receiving information, teams rushed to the spot and coordinated efforts to ensure the child’s safe evacuation.
According to officials, the borewell had been under construction for the past 15 days. A pipe had been inserted, but the surrounding pit was not properly filled. The sandy soil caused the child to slip and fall into the open space alongside the pipe.
The child’s mother said he did not fall straight into the pipe but slipped gradually while calling for help. Family members tried to reach him, but could not save him in time.
Punjab Jail Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh and Hoshiarpur MP Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal were also present at the site during the rescue operation. They praised the coordinated efforts of all teams involved in saving the child.
Dr. Ravjot Singh said the district administration, along with NDRF and local support, made strong arrangements that led to the successful rescue operation and saved the child’s life.
