A labourer was shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants in Naushehra Pannuan town of Tarn Taran district on Wednesday night. Police suspect gang rivalry behind the killing and have launched an investigation into the incident.

The deceased, identified as Kuldeep Singh, was a resident of Naushehra Pannuan in the Patti Assembly constituency. He worked as a labourer to support his family.

The incident comes two days after Sarhali police arrested Kuldeep Singh’s son, Manpreet Singh, for allegedly conducting reconnaissance in connection with a murder case.

In 2022, the Sarhali police station was targeted in a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack. Ajmeet Singh, identified as the alleged main conspirator in the attack, was shot dead on September 11. Exactly 30 days later, on October 11, his uncle, ASI Iqbal Singh, was also shot dead in Naushehra Pannuan.

During the investigation into ASI Iqbal Singh’s murder, police allegedly found that gangsters based abroad had used Manpreet Singh to conduct reconnaissance before the killing. Manpreet has been in Sarhali police custody for the past two days.

On Wednesday night, Kuldeep Singh was heading from his home towards the town’s main market to get a haircut when motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on him. He died in the attack.

The shooting triggered panic in the area. DSP Ravisher Singh reached the spot after receiving information about the incident.

Police took possession of the body and registered a case against unidentified assailants. Further investigation is underway to identify the attackers and establish the motive behind the murder.
