Daljit Singh, a young man from Bhamme Kalan village in Mansa district, was cremated in his native village on Friday, the 10th day after his death, following a post-mortem examination at PGI Chandigarh.

His sister, Amarjit Kaur, brought his body to the village cremation ground in an ambulance from Chandigarh.

In view of the High Court's strict directions, elaborate security arrangements were made at the cremation ground. Around 300 police personnel were deployed under the supervision of an SP to prevent any untoward incident. The court had also barred political leaders from attending the cremation.

On Thursday, Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan announced a compensation of ₹50 lakh for Daljit Singh's family and a government job for his wife.

According to the police, Daljit Singh was murdered and his body was dumped. Police claimed to have arrested three accused in connection with the case. His post-mortem was initially conducted at AIIMS Bathinda.

Meanwhile, differences emerged within the family over the cremation. Daljit's father, Jarnail Singh, reportedly asked his wife, mother and sister, who were sitting on a protest, to return to the village for the last rites.

Subsequently, his sister Amarjit Kaur approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking a CBI probe and custody of the body. The court initially ordered a post-mortem at PGI Chandigarh and cremation in Chandigarh. However, following the family's appeal, it later permitted the cremation to take place in the native village.

Daljit Singh went missing on October 27 after dropping his daughter at the school bus stop on his motorcycle. Later that afternoon, the family was informed that his body had been found lying along the road near Ramanandi village.

His wife, Paramjit Kaur, alleged that Daljit had given up drug consumption and was called by certain people. She claimed that he died after consuming an excessive quantity of drugs.

Demanding the arrest of those responsible, the family placed his body on the Sirsa-Mansa highway and blocked the road.

Following the incident, Parvinder Jhota's father, Bhim Singh, and Lakha Sidhana also reached the village and headed towards the protest site in Mansa with the body.

A confrontation broke out between protesters and police at Ramdittawala Chowk in the city during a police blockade. Subsequently, the City-1 police registered a case against 40 unidentified persons for allegedly attacking police personnel. Lakha Sidhana and Mohanjit Singh Sheron were arrested that evening, while several others were also detained.
