Commonwealth Games officially got underway with a spectacular opening ceremony at the OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, where India's 125-member contingent marched proudly behind flag bearers Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain.
Two-time Olympic medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and Tokyo Olympic bronze-winning boxer Lovlina Borgohain carried the Indian tricolour during the Parade of Nations. Britain's King Charles and Queen Camilla formally declared the Games open, following which athletes from 74 participating nations took part in the traditional march-past.
India also enjoyed an impressive start on the sporting front even before the opening ceremony concluded, with two victories in the lawn bowls competition.
Putul Sonowal stunned reigning world champion Ryan Bester of Canada in a major upset, while the women's doubles pair of Roopa Rani Tirkey and Pinky secured a thrilling opening win. The Indian duo defeated Malta's Rickson sisters—Rebecca Louise and Connie-Leigh—in a tie-breaker during their Group B encounter.
Meanwhile, India's flag bearer Lovlina Borgohain has already assured the country of at least a bronze medal in the women's 75kg boxing category after receiving a direct entry into the semifinals without playing a bout.
