The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has issued a notice to the Punjab Director of Census Operations after taking serious note of caste-indicative and objectionable words used in an official list prepared for upcoming census-related work.
The commission questioned why such terminology was included in government records and sought a detailed explanation from the concerned authorities. It also asked what action has been taken after the issue came to light.
The matter sparked anger among social organizations and members of the Dalit community, who objected to the use of casteist language in official documents. Several groups demanded accountability and strict action against those responsible.
The commission has directed officials to submit their response within the stipulated time period. It has also asked the Punjab authorities to clarify what corrective measures will be taken to ensure such language is not used in official documents in the future.
