Doctors and staff at Dera Bassi Civil Hospital in Mohali have suspended Outpatient Department (OPD) services and launched a protest following an alleged assault on an anesthesiologist. The protesters have accused the police of failing to arrest the accused even several hours after the incident.
Despite the strike, emergency medical services have been kept operational to ensure that patients requiring urgent care do not face inconvenience.
According to hospital authorities, anesthesiology specialist Dr. Jot Noor was attacked on Friday evening near the Forest Department office, where his car was parked. Two unidentified youths reportedly approached him and asked about his profession. After Dr. Noor identified himself as a doctor, the duo allegedly pushed and assaulted him.
Dr. Noor reportedly managed to escape and lock himself inside his vehicle, after which the attackers fled the scene.
The incident has sparked outrage among doctors and hospital employees, especially as the alleged assault took place barely 100 metres from the Dera Bassi police station, raising concerns over public safety and law enforcement effectiveness in the area.
Medical staff have alleged that despite filing a complaint, no concrete action has been taken against the accused so far. They have demanded immediate arrests and stronger security measures for healthcare workers.
Station House Officer (SHO) Sumit Mor said that a complaint has been received and the matter is currently under investigation. He assured that appropriate legal action would be taken in accordance with the law.
