At least 40 people were killed and eight others injured after a passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in the Dhansar area of Sherani district in Pakistan's Balochistan province on Thursday.

The bus was travelling from Dhansar in Sherani district towards Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when the accident occurred.

In a statement, Balochistan Chief Minister's Adviser on Media and Political Affairs, Shahid Rind, said preliminary reports confirmed the deaths of 40 passengers, while eight others sustained injuries in the crash.

Following directives from Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, rescue operations were launched immediately after the incident. District administrations from both Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, along with rescue teams and other concerned departments, are assisting the victims and coordinating relief efforts.

The injured were shifted to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Zhob for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were initially taken to a nearby rural health centre before being transferred to the DHQ Hospital in Zhob, according to Rescue 1122 officials.

Authorities have ordered an investigation into the accident to determine its exact cause.
