Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ram Singh, 51, died after his service AK-47 accidentally went off while he was cleaning the rifle during duty in Civil Lines, Pathankot, on Wednesday morning.
According to police, Ram Singh was cleaning his service weapon when it suddenly fired. The bullet passed through his head, resulting in his death on the spot.
Ram Singh was a resident of Bhoha village in Pathankot and had been serving in the Pathankot Police Lines for around eight years. Sub-Inspector Palwinder Singh said Ram Singh was deployed as the night munshi and was on night duty.
After completing his shift, Ram Singh was sitting in a tent shed outside the police station. Police said that due to the sensitive border location, weapons carried by personnel during night duty remain loaded.
As part of his routine, Ram Singh was cleaning his service rifle when it accidentally went off. Hearing the sound of the gunshot, police personnel and guards rushed to the spot. They found Ram Singh seriously injured, but he had already died.
After receiving information about the incident, senior police officials reached the spot and inspected the scene. A forensic team also visited the location and collected evidence.
Police have initiated an investigation to establish the exact circumstances that led to the accidental firing.
