The Punjab government has declared a government holiday on September 28 to mark the birth anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. The day is observed every year to honour his life, revolutionary ideas and contribution to India’s freedom struggle.
According to the Punjab government’s official 2026 holiday calendar, September 28 has been listed as the birth anniversary of S. Bhagat Singh Ji. The date falls on a Monday this year, and government offices and institutions covered under the holiday schedule will remain closed.
Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary holds special significance in Punjab, where various programmes are organised to remember his sacrifice and legacy. Tributes are generally paid at his statues, memorials and other places associated with his life, while educational and social organisations also hold programmes highlighting his contribution to the freedom movement.
Bhagat Singh was born on September 28, 1907, in Banga village in the Lyallpur district of undivided Punjab, which is now in Pakistan. He became actively involved in the freedom movement at a young age and emerged as one of the prominent revolutionary figures of the Indian independence struggle.
His writings and political ideas inspired many young people during the freedom movement. Bhagat Singh, along with Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, was executed on March 23, 1931. Their sacrifice continues to be remembered across the country, particularly in Punjab.
