Punjab DGP orders probe to identify accused in lynching of Lakhbir Singh at Singhu border

CHANDIGARH: Punjab DGP Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota today ordered a probe by SIT to probe the circumstances and identify the accused who lured him to go to Singhu border from his village Cheema Khurd in Tarn Taran district where he was lynched by Nihangs.

In a order issued today DGP has formed SIT headed by Varinder Kumar Director Punjab Investigation Bureau. Two other members of the SIT are Inderbir Singh DIG Ferozepur range and Harvinder Pal Singh SSP Tarn Taran. Varinder Kumar has also been given authority to pick any officer of his choice from Punjab Police to assist him.

DGP in its order said that Raj Kaur sister of Lakhbir Singh has complained to Police that he was lured by certain persons to accompany them to Singhu border where he was murdered by Nihangs on October 15,2021.

Nihangs had alleged that Lakhbir Singh was killed because he tried to steal the holy Guru Granth Sahib. The Nihangs who claimed the responsibility for the murder were allegedly in touch with senior BJP leaders including Agriculture minister Narender Tomar and Harjit Grewal, a Punjab BJP leader and national executive member. Infamous Gurmeet Singh Pinki former police cat and dismissed Inspector was also seen the pictures of Tomar with Nihangs that went viral on social media.

Punjab Home Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has alleged that there was conspiracy behind the murder of Lakhbir Singh to defame farmers who are protesting against the three agri bills.
