Punjab is set to transform classroom learning by introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a core subject for students from Class 1 to Class 12 in government schools. The new curriculum will come into effect from Thursday, making Punjab one of the few states in India to systematically integrate AI education at the school level.
Launching the AI-based curriculum on Wednesday, School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced that new textbooks would be distributed to students within the next 15 days. He said the AI syllabus would be updated every six months to keep pace with rapidly evolving technology and ensure students receive the latest knowledge.
To support the initiative, the Education Department has introduced regular teacher training programmes and live online classes to help educators stay updated with technological advancements and deliver modern, technology-driven education.
Speaking at the launch event, former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia stressed that future education should focus on developing students' ability to question, reason, and solve problems, rather than relying solely on rote learning. He also said AI could help make examination systems more transparent and reduce challenges such as paper leaks.
According to the Education Minister, many developed countries are rapidly expanding AI education at the school level. He said Punjab's initiative aims to provide students in government schools with globally relevant technological skills, preparing them for future career opportunities and the evolving demands of the digital economy.
