Punjab has uncovered large-scale adulteration in milk products after a recent state-wide testing drive found that 33 percent of collected milk samples failed to meet quality standards.
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in food adulteration across the state. He also confirmed that paneer samples have now been sent for laboratory testing as part of the intensified crackdown.
The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Punjab conducted a two-day state-level milk sampling campaign on May 6 and 7. During the drive, officials collected 204 milk samples, out of which 68 failed quality standards, while one sample was declared unsafe for consumption.
The Health Minister said all suspicious samples are being examined at accredited state food laboratories to identify the extent of adulteration and ensure strict enforcement against violators.
Meanwhile, under the supervision of FDA Punjab Commissioner Kanwal Preet Brar, another special drive was carried out on Monday and Tuesday during which 211 paneer samples were collected and sent for testing.
Officials said food safety teams are also educating food business operators about hygiene standards and proper storage practices. Authorities revealed that harmful chemicals are being used to adulterate paneer, while starch and sucrose are also commonly mixed in large quantities, posing serious health risks to consumers.
