Widespread rain lashed Punjab and Chandigarh on Saturday morning, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat and causing a noticeable drop in temperatures across the region. Light hail accompanied the rain in Chandigarh, while heavy showers were reported from Mohali and Jalandhar.
In Amritsar, strong winds swept through the city since early morning, leading to the breaking of tree branches at several locations. Intermittent drizzle was also reported in the district.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, the recent spell of rain in the hill regions has contributed to a significant decline in temperatures across Punjab and adjoining areas. The weather department has projected that the ongoing heatwave conditions will completely subside by June 4.
Pathankot witnessed a hailstorm, which was followed by waterlogging in several low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for rain and gusty winds over the next two hours in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, and 13 districts of Punjab.
The districts under alert include Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala (Rajpura), Rupnagar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot.
Meanwhile, the Punjab State Disaster Management Authority has forecast very dense fog at multiple locations in Amritsar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, and Patiala during the next 24 hours. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and contact emergency services by dialing 112 in case of any urgent situation.
