Significant reduction in Road Crashes & Fatality rate in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh Police has chalked out a comprehensive strategy to minimize road accidents and fatalities across the State. In a remarkable achievement, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a substantial decrease in road crashes and fatalities, highlighting the effectiveness of enforcing motor vehicle rules and laws at the grassroots level. A comparison of data from the period of January 1st to March 31st, 2023, with the same period in 2024, reveals a significant decline in road incidents (Graph attached). We have succeeded in reducing accidents by 14%, fatalities by 27% and injuries by 18 % in the State during the year 2024 in comparison to the year 2023.
Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh Sanjay Kundu (IPS), commended the diligent efforts of the Traffic, Tourists and Railway wing in analyzing live road crash data effectively. This analytical approach has facilitated informed decision-making and the formulation of targeted strategies to mitigate road accidents and fatalities. Directives have been issued to Police officials at the grassroots level to take proactive measures to prevent road crashes and reduce fatalities. These concerted efforts of law enforcement agency coupled with community engagement and awareness programs, have contributed to this positive outcome.
Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a noteworthy decrease in road crashes and fatalities, thanks to the implementation of new technological measures and modern equipment provided through the World Bank-funded HP State Road Transformation Project (HPSRTP). The project, with a total sponsored amount of Rs. 47.79 Cr, is a 5-year program being executed through Traffic, Tourist & Railways Police which serves as the Nodal agency on behalf of the Himachal Pradesh Police Department.
This project marks a significant step forward in enhancing road safety and reducing road accidents in Himachal Pradesh, demonstrating the Himachal Pradesh Police's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens. The Himachal Pradesh Police remains committed to ensuring road safety and will continue to work tirelessly to further reduce road crashes and fatalities in the state.
