Indian stock market witnessed a sharp decline on Thursday, with benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opening in the red amid weak investor sentiment.
In early trade, the BSE Sensex plunged 642.51 points to 73,067.18, while the NSE Nifty dropped 241.35 points to 22,570.90, slipping below the 22,600 mark.
The sharp fall reflected negative sentiment in the domestic equity market, with both benchmark indices registering significant losses during the initial trading session.
Meanwhile, the Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar. The domestic currency fell 12 paise to 94.50 per dollar in early trade.
The decline in equities, coupled with the rupee's weakness, set a cautious tone for the market at the start of Thursday's trading session.
