Centre has allowed duty-free imports of sugar until October 31, 2026, in a move aimed at easing supply shortages and bringing down rising prices.

Retail sugar prices are currently around ₹55 per kg. Sugar prices have surged by nearly 40% across the country over the past two months due to lower sugarcane production and rising demand. Adverse weather conditions, including excessive rainfall and drought, have affected sugarcane crops, which require adequate water for healthy growth.

The government has decided to allow sugar imports for the first time in nearly eight years to bridge the supply gap. As per the order, the imported sugar must arrive in the country between now and October 31, 2026.

The move comes ahead of the festive season, when demand for sugar typically rises sharply due to Diwali and Durga Puja. Sweet shops, bakeries, biscuit manufacturers and other food companies are also expected to stock up on sugar ahead of the festivals.

The duty-free imports are expected to strengthen the supply chain and provide relief from high prices to consumers, confectioners and food businesses.

At the same time, the government has completely restricted sugar exports to ensure adequate domestic availability. The export restrictions will remain in force until September 30, 2026. Sugar has been placed under the restricted export category, meaning traders cannot export it without government permission.
