Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal appeared before the Punjab government's Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Chandigarh on Monday for questioning in connection with the 2015 Behbal Kalan police firing case.
A large number of SAD supporters assembled outside the SIT office despite heavy rain, raising slogans in support of the former Deputy Chief Minister. His appearance comes amid heightened political tensions, with speculation over possible legal action against him. SIT had issued a summons to Badal on July 16.
Earlier this month, the newly constituted SIT, headed by DIG Harjeet Singh, revisited the sites at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala, Bargari, and Behbal Kalan to recreate the sequence of events. The team examined evidence and also inspected Bajakhana police station, where the case diary and related investigation records are preserved.
Investigation relates to two FIRs registered at Bajakhana police station on October 14 and October 21, 2015, following the sacrilege incidents and the subsequent police firing at Behbal Kalan. The incidents had a profound impact on Punjab's political landscape and social fabric. The SIT is now conducting face-to-face questioning of key individuals in an effort to establish the full sequence of events and determine accountability.
