Amritsar Police have claimed to have foiled a suspected terror plot ahead of the festive season by arresting an accused and recovering an AK-47 rifle and a hand grenade from his possession. The recovery has put security agencies on alert, while investigators have started probing the accused’s contacts and possible links with a wider network.

According to police, the accused was already under surveillance based on intelligence inputs. Acting on the information, a police team carried out an operation and arrested him. During the search, an AK-47 rifle and a hand grenade were recovered from his possession. Police are now investigating where the weapons came from and for what purpose they were allegedly being kept.

The recovery has been taken seriously as the festive season is approaching and public movement is expected to increase at markets, religious places and other crowded locations. Security agencies are examining all possible angles to determine whether the accused was planning any criminal or terror-related activity.

During interrogation, investigators are also seeking information about the accused’s associates, contacts and possible facilitators. Police are examining whether he had any links with a terror organisation or an illegal arms-supply network. Investigators are also expected to examine his mobile phone and other digital information as part of the probe.

Following the recovery, security arrangements in Amritsar and surrounding areas have been strengthened. Police teams are maintaining increased surveillance at sensitive locations and keeping a close watch on suspicious activities.

A case has been registered against the accused and further investigation is underway. Police are trying to establish the complete chain behind the recovered weapons and determine whether any larger network was involved.

Officials said further arrests or recoveries cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses. The exact motive behind possession of the AK-47 and hand grenade will become clear after the investigation and interrogation of the accused are completed.
